This was a awesome place to stay on the island. You are right next to the water which is awesome. Great views of the sunsets. We met the owner who could not have been nicer. It was very quiet, clean, and comfortable so it was perfect.

The friendly staff and warm, cozy lodgings made it feel like you were staying at a friend’s cottage, while still allowing plenty of personal space. The views are spectacular, especially sunset (hence the name!). Steve and his family are very welcoming and helpful. The breakfasts were delicious. Would love to visit again!

We felt like we were at home there. We sat on a log by the lake and watched the sunset. We sat and watched the vice presidential debates in the common living room, and I was so comfortable. I almost fell asleep on the sofa. A few days after we were back home in Illinois a small box arrived in the mail from the Sunset Resort. We didn’t even realize we had forgot some headphones in the room, and they mailed them back to us! Thank you Sunset Resort!

I feel so lucky as to spend my first time @Washington Island at the Sunset Resort. The family history is amazing as stated in other reviews and the breakfast is memorable. I really enjoyed the location and the beautiful sunsets at this resort. I felt like I was on the East Coast seaside

We visited Washington island and stayed in sunset resort for July 4th long weekend and it was certainly the best decision that we’ve ever made. The owners were kind, helpful and interactive. We loved the view from our room and there were facilities available for campfire. We enjoyed making s’mores and gazing at the stars at night. There were also board games that were available at the TV room. They provided delicious pancakes for breakfast and coffee was available all time at the table. Overall an unforgettable stay and we would definitely recommend visiting them!

What a gem of a place! I only stayed on the island one night, but I was wishing that I could stay a week here. So peaceful and relaxing, right on the water! It's a very historic family lodge, very old-fashioned and just like the old family resort up in northern Minnesota that my family went to when I was young. Room was clean and the bed was comfortable There are chairs and a swing for relaxing by the water, and comfortable common areas inside the lodge to relax - they have board games and puzzles, couches to sit and read, fireplaces to keep warm. A nice touch was the available binoculars on the enclosed porch to birdwatch or look at passing boats. There is a smaller shared kitchenette area for guests to use with a large fridge/freezer and microwave, toaster etc (separate from their own lodge kitchen). The larger dining area with many tables is used for breakfast, and they give you a card with your room number to set up on the table of your choice, so that table is "yours" for the duration of your stay and you can use it any time. The included breakfast is way better than expected! Traditional Scandinavian bread and pancakes, and homemade jams! Sausage and eggs, and yogurts available. Tea, coffee and juice options.

We’ve stayed at a number of places throughout Door County over the years — including well-known spots like Rowley’s Bay and Shoreline — but this owner-operated resort has truly become our favorite. Run by Steve and Phyllis, who are as genuine and kind as they come, the place radiates warmth and welcome. They’re the kind of salt-of-the-earth people who go out of their way to make sure your stay is comfortable, and it shows in every thoughtful detail. The décor is charmingly older — not dated, but timeless — with large, open common areas perfect for enjoying a meal, chatting with fellow guests, or just sitting quietly to take in the view. And what a view: the property boasts absolutely breathtaking water and sunset vistas, best enjoyed from a cozy chair or a peaceful stroll along the expansive lake shore. Our room had whisper-quiet heating and cooling — something we didn’t know we needed until we experienced it — making for a truly restful night’s sleep. And the quiet extends beyond the rooms: the entire property is set far back from the road, surrounded by natural beauty and total serenity. Guests were friendly, respectful, and clearly there to enjoy the calm as much as we were. Mornings were made even better with a delightful variety of homemade Nordic breads and jam — a rare and delicious treat — along with hot coffee, decaf, and a generous tea selection. In short, this place is a gem: peaceful, gracious, and lovingly cared for. We left feeling restored and grateful — and hoping that Steve, Phyllis, and every future guest enjoy long, happy, and prosperous lives. They’ve certainly created a space that fosters just that.

Lovely stay at Sunset Resort. Steve and Phyllis were welcoming upon our arrival. You're assigned a table during your stay that you can use anytime of day, which is a nice touch to feel you have something of your own in a shared space. The bed was incredibly comfortable as was the room which has its own AC/heat unit to keep the temperature comfortable. The views from the room were spectacular as is the property in general. Coffee, tea, juice, yogurt and homemade breads & jams are available in the morning with the full breakfast spread of eggs (cooked two ways), sausage, and Icelandic pancakes available from 8-9am. We look forward to future stays here and highly recommend spending the night at this peaceful resort.

The place is in excellent condition, especially for its age. The room was very clean and comfortable. It was nice that fall asleep to the sounds of the waves with the window cracked open after watching the sunset. The friendly staff served a continental breakfast since the cooked breakfasts are only served on weekends. Their homemade cherry rhubarb jam was insanely delicious. Useful details: Different types of pillows provided to accommodate a variety of preferences. The mattress is firm. The water pressure is excellent. There is a fridge and an iron and ironing board but they're both in the little back common area, not in your room. I found this convenient enough. They have binoculars set out for your use by the common area windows. I'd love to return to Sunset Resort!

This is a nicely kept older resort. Everything was clean and rooms were very comfortable. If you want relaxation, stay here. You are greeted with a smile and shown to your room. They have a large eating area and an awesome breakfast. You take your room number and select the table you want for breakfast, way cool Homemade cinnamon coffee cake, Swedish pancakes, sausage, fruit, coffee, juice, selection of bread, and some of the best cherry jelly around. Books, games, and a stunning view. What more do you need.
